FUE vs FUT Hair Transplant: Which is Right for You?
Understanding the Two Gold-Standard Techniques
Hair transplant surgery has evolved dramatically over the past two decades. Today, the two most widely performed techniques are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Both move healthy hair follicles from your donor area (typically the back and sides of the scalp) to thinning or bald areas — but the way they harvest those follicles is fundamentally different.
At Density Clinic, our surgeons perform both techniques and will recommend the right one based on your unique anatomy, donor density, and goals.
What is FUE?
In FUE, individual follicular units (groups of 1–4 hairs) are extracted one by one from the donor area using a precision micro-punch tool — typically 0.7–0.9mm in diameter. Each extraction leaves a tiny circular scar that heals to become virtually invisible, even with very short hair.
Best suited for:
- Patients who prefer to keep hair very short
- Those with a limited donor area
- People who want minimal downtime (return to desk work in 3–5 days)
- Beard or eyebrow transplant candidates (FUE is the only viable option here)
Typical graft range: 1,000–4,000 grafts per session
What is FUT?
In FUT (also called the "strip method"), a thin strip of scalp — usually from the back of the head — is surgically removed. The strip is then dissected under microscopes into individual follicular units. The donor area is sutured closed, leaving a single linear scar that is hidden by surrounding hair.
Best suited for:
- Patients needing a large number of grafts in a single session
- Those with good scalp laxity (loose skin at the back)
- People who don't plan to shave their head very short
- Budget-conscious patients (FUT is slightly lower cost per graft at scale)
Typical graft range: 2,000–5,000 grafts per session
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | FUE | FUT |
|---|---|---|
| Scarring | Tiny dots, highly dispersed | Single linear scar, hidden by hair |
| Recovery time | 3–7 days | 10–14 days |
| Graft yield per session | Up to 4,000 | Up to 5,000+ |
| Suitable for short hair | ✅ Yes | ❌ Not ideal |
| Cost per graft | Slightly higher | Slightly lower |
| Surgeon involvement | Very high (our surgeons do every extraction) | High |
The Most Important Factor: Surgeon Skill
No technique compensates for poor execution. At Density Clinic, every extraction and implantation is performed by our lead surgeon — we never delegate to technicians. This single commitment has a bigger impact on your result than which technique you choose.
Which Should You Choose?
If you're unsure, book a free consultation. Our surgeon will assess your donor density, baldness grade (using the Norwood scale), and lifestyle to recommend the technique that will deliver the best natural result for your specific situation.
Free consultations are available in Ranchi and Patna — no obligation, no pressure.
